EXPLORING NATURE: The most accessible, most affordable and most attractive sources of fun for kids on the southern coast are the same ones that draw adults in droves; the beaches and nearby waterways. So no matter what your kids’ ages, get them down to the water. Combining activities with beach visits may also be worthwhile. The area offers pristine surf and calm tidal waters on the inland side suitable for toddlers. TOP

ANIMALS: Despite the growing population of this region, it’s not so hard to spot glimpses of nature here and there. In fact, it is not uncommon to witness hawks, ospreys and other shore birds taking lunch breaks. Deer are frequently sighted on the island areas at dusk. And watching dolphins cavort mere yards offshore can be endlessly entertaining. Watching huge sea turtles lay nests or hatch and return to the sea is a awe-inspiring experience. Visit the Turtle Hospital on the Island for more viewings and education. TOP

WATERSPORTS: If you’re passionate about watersports or just an enthusiastic novice, North Carolina’s southern coastline offers the perfect spot to hone your skills with a combination of mild weather, warm water temperatures, good water quality, and clean, uncrowded beaches. Our coastal waters are warmed by the Gulf Stream, which not only makes for long seasons for watersports, but also brings a surprising array of tropical sea life. The region's overall subtropical climate often allows watersports enthusiasts to indulge their particular passions from early spring through late fall. Add the Intracoastal Waterway, sounds, tidal marshes, rivers and their tributaries to a generous Atlantic coastline, and the opportunities for fun in or on top of the water are limited only by your sense of adventure.
