Here we go!

1. Ecological Marine Adventures (EMA) Children's Aquarium/Marine Exploration Lab

Topsail Island's marine science center is found right here! Located in Surf City, the EMA Children's Aquarium and Marine Exploration Lab ignites children's natural curiosity in the world around them while providing them the knowledge and tools to preserve, protect, and enjoy the environment for the future.

The aquarium is free and open to the public year round. They offer fun, exciting and educational activities, classes and programs for both locals and vacationers.

Be sure to check out the
free Community Marine Science Class each Tuesday from 1-2p.m. at the Public Beach Access on Goldsboro Avenue in Surf City starting in early June and ending Labor Day weekend.

The EMA's Facebook page is worth looking at for the latest updates on activities, special programs and classes.

2. Patio Playground & The Putt-Putt

The Patio Playground has been on Topsail Island for a long time, but if you're not familiar with the area, you may not know about it. Once you do, you never forget this family-fun gem. The Patio Playground and The Putt-Putt offer mini golf, two arcades, a DJ, and some of the best ice cream and malts found on the island.

The kids can dance, sing and play their hearts out. If you're looking for a break from the beach or to take the kids somewhere new, give this a shot. It's both kid-friendly and wallet-friendly. Win-win!

3. Pier Fishing

Family fishing on Topsail Island NC

Pier fishing is a great way to have a family day out. The pier provides you with what you need in the form of bait, tackle and a blanket license, so it's a low-maintenance way to spend the day. Teach your kids the thrill of casting a line and waiting for the big one to bite. Build memories that will last a lifetime and spend some good old-fashioned time together in the coastal outdoors.

North Topsail Beach has the Sea View Fishing Pier, one of the longest piers in North Carolina, for your fishing pleasure. There is also the Surf City Ocean Pier, which was Topsail Island's first ocean pier. You can't go wrong with either place as each offers its own unique charm. Try them both if you can. Be sure to check their hours of operation before you go, especially during the off-season.

4. Pirate Cruise

It wouldn't be a Topsail Island beach vacation without a pirate adventure, arrrrr! The Belle of Topsail offers a family Pirate Cruise complete with water cannons and black powder cannons, if you dare to sail the ocean blue with these scallywags.

The kids might enjoy a little piratical education at Pirate School aboard The Raven. Whether ye still be getting yar sea legs or whether ye be a swashbuckling buccaneer, you can still learn a thing or two about pirate life. They'll flog any remaining scurvy-infested landlubber right outta ya. Be ye warned! Keep yar eye out for treasure, too.

Pirate cruises and pirate school are seasonal, so be sure to check out their schedule of operation before making your plans to set sail on the high seas.

5. Topsail Beach Roller Skating Rink

How about a throwback to the good ol' days? Plan a family day out to the Topsail Beach Skating Rink and show your kids what good old-fashioned fun is all about. Feel free to show off your skills by amazing them with your pivots, stops and all-around awesome roller skating moves.

The Topsail Beach Skating Rink is open every night from 7-10p.m. most of the year. Sometimes it's closed during cold and/or inclement weather, so it's best to call first.
