Free Movies, Concerts & Magic Shows at Soundside Park, Surf City

Soundside Park itself should stand alone on our list as one of the best free things to do here on Topsail Island. Hmmm, oh well, too late. We'll just talk about it here in this section. This beautiful waterfront park overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway and offers fabulous views, boardwalks meandering the sound, viewing decks and a fishing pier. The park is immaculately manicured and well taken care of making it a favorite for family get-togethers, wedding ceremonies, vow renewals, birthday parties and more. There are picnic shelters, an amphitheater and a spectacular playground that is well loved by kids of all ages.

In addition to the family-friendly amenities found at Soundside Park, there are also fun, free events happening throughout the year here. April offers a free Easter egg hunt for the kiddos at the park. Beginning in May, you can find Friday nights at the park filled with free concerts, free movie nights, and free magic shows. (Stay tuned, we'll keep you posted on the schedule when it's available.) October you'll find the Fall Festival at the park. November is the Surf City Christmas Tree Lighting, which kicks off the holiday season here on Topsail.

What can we say other than we love, love, love this place for so many reasonsand we know you will too. If you want to know what's happening at Soundside Park, visit their Facebook page for the latest and greatest park updates, events and local park news.

Surf City Summer Market

Looking for a local shopping experience that you and your family will love? Look no further. The Surf City Summer Market is an arts, crafts and farmers market combining talented local vendors with amazing local goods, products and services. You'll find a little bit of everything here at the market, and there are always new vendors being added so be sure to visit as often as you can.

The Surf City Market offers a little bit of everything including the freshest local produce, handmade jewelry, outdoor decor, freshly baked goods, local honey, unique baby items, pet-friendly products.... and that's just the short list.

The Surf City Summer Market usually runs from May through September each Tuesday from 10a.m. to 3p.m., but it's best to check here for the most up-to-date information. There's a Holiday Market in November, too, that's worth checking out. The market is free but bringing some spending money is highly recommended, of course.

Missiles & More Museum, Topsail Beach

Located on Channel Boulevard in Topsail Beach, the Missiles and More Museum is housed in the historic Assembly Building. What makes it historic? Constructed in 1946, the Assembly Building was used by the government to assemble missiles for a secret missile operation being conducted on Topsail Island. Intriguing, isn't it? That's why you and the family should find out more about Topsail Island's top secret past by visiting the Missiles and More Museum.

The museum offers exhibits on display that include information on Barrier Island, Camp Davis, Operation Bumblebee, Osprey Aircraft, WASPS, Pirates, and even some natural history. Admission is free, but donations are always welcomed. The Missiles and More Museum is open April through mid-October, but hours vary. Click here for more information on the museum's hours of operation.

Surf City Ocean Pier

A trip to Topsail Island is not complete without a visit to the pier. The Surf City Ocean Pier is a fisherman's delight. You don't have to be a fisherman to enjoy the pier, though. It's a great place for the family to visit. Take in the ocean and island views from a pier-perspective, watch the local anglers, stop for a bite to eat at The Grill, and stay long enough to catch the sunset.

The Surf City Pier is free for the kids and only a dollar for adults (that's almost free, right?) if you're just looking to walk the pier and enjoy the views. If you're interested in fishing, the pier offers a blanket license, which is very convenient and one less thing you have to worry about during your vacation. They offer a wide selection of fishing packages including daily, seasonal and combo options if you're interested. You should give it a go! The Surf City Pier is open 24 hours and the reopens for the season each March.

Well, those are our recommendations for free, family fun on Topsail Island. We'd love to hear yours!
