The Best Ways to Spend Your Labor Day on Topsail Island

The symbolic end of summer is approaching quickly. Have you made plans for the Labor Day holiday? Why not spend it on the beach? It's one of the best ways to relish the last days of the summer season!

Wondering how best to spend your time over the Labor Day holiday on Topsail Island? We can help you with that. We have some great suggestions.

On the fishing pier

The Surf City Ocean Pier is a great place to spend some time over the Labor Day holiday. Everything you need is right there. Bait and tackle, fish cleaning stations, plenty of parking, souvenirs to take home with you (other than your fresh catch of the day!), and a place to grab a bite of a different kindsomething off the grill such as a burger or a tasty sweet treat like ice cream. The best part is that you don't need to bother with getting a NC fishing license since the pier offers a blanket license for those who choose to fish there.

Labor Day weekend is your last chance to catch a free movie at Soundside Park for the season. Friday, September 4 is the last showing of the summer. Don't miss it! After all, what better way to spend your Friday evening than with family and friends for an outdoor movie under the stars?

The September 4 showing features the 2014 Disney movie Planes Fire & Rescue. This high-flying adventure is rated PG and is sure to offer excitement and laughs for the young and young-at-heart. Bring your blanket or a comfy chair and find your spot under the stars. The movie begins after dusk.

There's more family fun to be had at the park, so come see for yourself!

In our local markets

We love our local markets! They are a great place to shop for the best in locally-made and locally-sourced products. You'll find everything from produce to products, all while shopping and buying local. We appreciate that! It's the perfect place to stock up your vacation rental kitchen, to find a souvenir to take home with you, or to shop for a unique gift for someone special.

The Surf City Summer Market finishes up the season in September, so don't miss your chance to stop by. They're open on Tuesdays from 9am to 2pm at Soundside Park. This combination arts and crafts meets farmers' market offers so much for your shopping pleasure. You'll find fresh local produce, handmade jewelry, beachy outdoor decor, fresh-baked goods, pet products, one-of-kind baby items, locally roasted coffee and so much more.

If you want to make a day trip of it, the Poplar Grove Farmers' Market is located near Wilmington, North Carolina (about a 30-minute drive from Topsail) and offers a great place to shop, and learn a little history of the area while you're at it. You can expect fresh fruits, vegetables, plants, herbs, flowers, eggs, cheese, meats, seafood, honey, baked goods, peanuts and a variety of handcrafted items from regional artisans. The farmers' market is open on Wednesdays from 8am to 1pm through November.

On the beach

Okay, this is a no-brainer but it has to be mentioned. This is what you come to Topsail Island for, isn't it? Gorgeous pristine beaches, sparkling Atlantic waters and coastal beauty as far as the eye can see.

Spend your days on the sand with family and friends or bring along a great read. Why not try your hand at surf fishing? Go shelling. Search for sharks' teeth. Embark on a surfing adventure.

Of course, just sitting back and relaxing under the sun, surrounded by the sea and breathing in the salt air is just perfectly fine, too. Aahh! See you on the sand!
