Ah, the beach. There are quite a few reasons people desire the beach life. Of course living at the beach is a beautiful option, but did you know it's a healthy one, too? 

Beaches offer up a restorative environment where people can renew their adaptive resources to meet the demands of stressful lives, according to a recent scientific study. It stands to reason that living at the beach gives you increased opportunity to do just that. Other research also indicates that proximity to the coast was positively associated with good health, with a small, but significant increase in the percentage of people reporting good health among populations residing closer to the sea.

But that's not at all. Take a look at these compelling reasons how and why the beach can improve your mind, body and spirit. It just makes sense to live at the beach, don't you think?

There's talk in the scientific world about "blue space" and its effects on your brain. Blue space is basically about immersing yourself in an environment of blue skies and blue waters as a way to lower your brain's perception of stress and distress.

Beyond just the Vitamin D factor, natural light boosts your serotonin levels, which is the feel-good transmitter responsible for happier feelings and brighter moods. There are also scientific studies that indicate an association between decreased exposure to sunlight and increased probability of cognitive impairment among those with depression.

Breathing in the salty air can also have the same effects. Fresh ocean air is filled with negative ions, which can help increase your intake of oxygen. This achieves balance in our levels of serotonin, which can help regulate our natural sleep and wake cycles along with boosting mood, as previously mentioned.

Get Your Vitamin D Naturally:
While you can get your daily dose of D through certain foods and supplements, it only takes a few minutes of direct sunlight to get your Vitamin D naturally and effectively. The Vitamin D Council states: "Exposing your skin for a short time will make all the Vitamin D your body can produce in one day. In fact, your body can produce 10,000 to 25,000 IU of Vitamin D in just a little under the time it takes for your skin to turn pink." Sand is a Natural Exfoliant: Slough off that dry skin with a little natural exfoliation thanks to the sand. Lose those flaky, dried out skin cells and trade them for a healthy glow. Just a walk on the beach can do the trick, especially for your feet which often need it the most. Rinse off with some salt water (see below), and you're good to go. 

The Ocean is Good for You: Salty sea water contains a high mineral content including magnesium, iodine and potassium to name a few. This high mineral content can have a therapeutic effect, as well as ward off infections with the potential to heal your body and detoxify it. There's also the swimming aspect of the ocean, where you have ample opportunity to get out and get wet. Swimming has numerous health benefits: it requires no special equipment, it can be done at all ages, and it is an excellent low-impact exercise that works out almost all of the major muscle groups while providing gentle resistance via the water. It's a wonderful way for those with injuries or joint pain to get in a workout.

Exercise is Easier: It is so much easier to get exercise at the beach. From daily walks along the shoreline and the extra resistance offered by the sand you're walking in, to all of the healthy watersport options that come with beach life—getting your exercise in is just so much easier when it's close and convenient. Throw in some stunning coastal scenery, spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and a chance to inhale some salty ocean air, and you'll find more reasons to get outdoors and stay active than not to. We all know that's half the battle!

We live in an ever-increasingly plugged-in world. While it can be a necessary thing, it also becomes necessary to get away from it and unplug a while. We all need a technology-free respite more often than not. Being at the beach makes it a little bit easier to unplug. There are better things to focus on and the reality is that you don't always want to get your electronics sandy, wet or lost. It's easier to just leave them at home, and that can be a very good thing.
